The 175th Anniversary Season of Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal Church is being commemorated in 2013.  Throughout the existence of this church, its organizations, clubs, and ministries have given vital services through their members to the church and community.  Today, some of these organizations, several of whom have operated in some form dating as far back as the founding of Metropolitan Church itself, celebrate Organizations Annual Day.  “On the Solid Rock:  We Stand, We Serve,” the church’s anniversary theme, is the general focus of church organizations and ministries.

The Organizations Annual Day, sponsored by the Presidents Council, is celebrated on the 3rd Sunday in March.  “The Presidents Council” was founded in 1951, by the pastor, Rev. G. Dewey Robinson to replace “The Federation of Church Clubs.”  Mrs. Julia West Hamilton was the last person to serve as president of the Federation.  The Presidents Council is comprised of leaders of several Metropolitan organizations, clubs, auxiliaries, and ministries; Rev. Marie P. Braxton is ministerial advisor.  Charlotte K. Thomas, Carrie Rhodes Gant, Pansy Bryant Pughsley, Laura Lillian Banks, Fannie D. Johnson Smith, Joan W. Oxendine, and Carolyn McClain have served as president of the Presidents Council.

The Presidents Council works diligently to keep members informed of church policy/protocol and aware of scheduled events/activities.  In addition to being updated on administrative matters, at the Council’s monthly meeting, information is shared on each organization’s activities, and ways are discussed for the organizations to function as a team.  A Council goal is to ensure the smooth coordination and scheduling of church activities and events by organizations working together in support of each one’s efforts.

You are invited to become active in a church organization.  Membership in a club/organization can enhance personal development and can provide potential resources that aid in meeting needs in the church and community.  The church will then flourish and the ministries and organizations will function more effectively and efficiently to address many spiritual and social issues through the commitment and dedication of personal time, talent, and resources and through the service of its membership.

Each year, as a result of the congregation’s support and members’ stewardship, through financial donations, membership dues, and fundraising activities, each organization of the Presidents Council, that is financially able, contributes an assessment to assist in meeting the church’s conference financial obligations to the Connectional A.M.E. Church.  The funds, “Conference Claims,” become part of the A.M.E. Church’s General Budget.
