Episcopal Supervisor Pam DeVeaux strongly encourages members of all congregations to attend the event and support these students.

Dr. Yvonne Bolling, director of Christian Education and Robie A. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Statistics for 2010:

• The number of people incarcerated in the U.S. has risen from 300,000 in 1995 to 2,300,000, 1.2 million of whom are mostly low income African Americans.
• Nearly 1 in 3 young black males are in prison, on probation, or on parole
• Black juveniles account for 58% of inmates committed to state adult prisons
• The negative impacts of incarceration include:
  • limited voting rights
  • unequal access to job opportunities
  • unequal access to housing and public benefits
  • the lifelong stigma and effective “punishment for life” of a criminal record
• Blacks are six times more likely to be victims of violent crimes compared to their white counterparts.

Details of the March 29th Silent March: Willie Jolley (noted author and motivational speaker) will serve as Master of Ceremonies and Dr. Michael Eric Dyson (noted author, radio host and professor of sociology at Georgetown University) is the keynote speaker at the March 29th Silent March event. Other speakers include Akosua Tyus, President, NAACP-DC Chapter; Roach Brown, host of WPFW’s “Inner Visions” and advocate for ex-offenders and youth; King Downing, Esq., Founder, Human Rights-Racial Justice Center (NY); and Rev. Anthony J. Motley, Ward 8 in Washington, DC.

About Metropolitan A.M.E. Church:
Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal Church (MAMEC) is known as “The National Cathedral of African Methodism.” Founded in 1838, MAMEC celebrates its 175th anniversary under the theme, “On the Solid Rock: We Stand, We Serve.” Metropolitan has hosted several American Presidents, beginning with William Howard Taft, and has held funeral services of civil rights icons such as Frederick Douglass and Mrs. Rosa Parks. Green, Jr., Minister of Music at Metropolitan A.M.E., will conduct the performance.   Metropolitan, the denomination’s National Cathedral of African Methodism, will webcast this Good Friday presentation for the first time.

Rev. Ronald E. Braxton, senior pastor, said the entire Washington community is invited to hear this sacred music  which will end an extraordinary day planned at the church:

At noon, Metropolitan will hold its annual Seven Last Words service.

At 1:00 pm,  Rev. Braxton and his congregation, led by the Mighty Men of Metropolitan, are organizing a Good Friday Silent March and Call to Action.  The March is a passionate plea to “Stop the Pipeline to Prison and End Gun Violence,” and is designed to increase national awareness of the disproportionate incarcerations of African Americans and rampant gun violence in African American communities,  as well as increase support for proposed federal and state gun control legislation.

Free parking is available for “Seven Last Words.”

Marchers will gather at Metropolitan A.M.E. Church and walk to Freedom Plaza, on Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W.

Community, business and elected leaders, along with youth and clergy, will discuss the ongoing negative effects of the overrepresentation of African Americans  in America’s prison system and the pain that guns have caused in the lives of our people.

Alternative solutions will be offered — to begin to end these plagues that continue to devastate our communities — and our nation.
