The 61st Session of the Washington Annual Conference of the 2nd Episcopal District
Tuesday April 26 – Saturday, April 30, 2011

 The Washington Annual Conference, of the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church hosts its 61st Session under the dynamic leadership of the Presiding Prelate for the Second Episcopal District, The Right Reverend Adam J. Richardson, Jr. and the Episcopal Supervisor for the WMS, YPD, and Clergy Families Organization of the Second Episcopal District, Dr. Connie Speights Richardson. The 61st Session is scheduled for Tuesday, April 26 – Saturday, April 30, 2011, at Ebenezer African Methodist Episcopal Church, 7707 Allentown Road, Fort Washington, Maryland 20744, where the Reverend Drs. Grainger and JoAnn Browning are the Pastors. This year’s theme: The Call to Vigilance: Continuing a Prophetic Ministry Focus: AIR (Attention, Intention, Retention) A Ministry of and for Young Adults.

The Reverend Dr. Louis-Charles Harvey (Potomac District) is the Host Presiding Elder and the Reverend Dr. Goodwin Douglas (Capital District) is the Associate Presiding Elder. The Conference Coordinator is the Reverend Dr. Ronald E. Braxton, Pastor of Metropolitan AME Church, in Washington, DC.

Mr. Blake worked on the Obama for America campaign, first as Deputy Political Director and Constituency Outreach Director in Iowa and as Deputy Director and Political Director in Michigan. Prior to that, Mr. Blake was the Director of External Affairs for the Michigan House of Representatives serving in Michigan Speaker of the House Andy Dillon’s cabinet. Before that appointment, he successfully co-organized three state house campaigns in the 2006 election cycle. Mr. Blake is a graduate of the Medill School of Journalism from Northwestern University. He is also an alumnus of the Yes We Can political training program in Washington, D.C. He started his political career as an assistant for Illinois State Senator Jeff Schoenberg.

In his own words:“I say that I’m a skinny kid from The Bronx, whose family went from no house in Jamaica to The White House in D.C, who was told that I wasn’t smart enough to get into Northwestern, came from an elementary school was referred to having ‘savage inequalities’ and was told that I was silly for moving to Iowa to try and get President Obama elected.” “Fortunately, those who inspired me reminded me that no person can stop what God has in store.”

The Washington Annual Conference hosts its 61st  Session under the dynamic leadership of the Presiding Prelate for the Second Episcopal District, the Right Reverend Adam J. You’re invited to worship with the Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal Church as the Presidents’ Council, on its 60th Annual Organizations’ Day, will commemorate the church’s many ministries, clubs, and organizations for the services and outreach provided to our church and the community.

Additionally, Women’s History Month will be acknowledged.  Members of the newly chartered section of the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW), designated as Women of Defense, will be our special guests. This unique section, NCNW’s first and only military section is comprised of distinguished active, retired, and civilian Black women in all branches of our armed forces.  Brigadier General Belinda Pinckney (U.S. Army, Retired) will deliver comments during the church service.

You can help increase the visibility of the church’s ministries, clubs, organizations, and its community service in several ways:

• Attend this special service.
• Send this message to friends and colleagues.
• Urge family and friends who are military retirees, active military, and in ROTC programs to attend service on March 20th.
• Share the history and unique roles of women in the A.M.E. Church and Black women in the U.S. Armed Forces.

Rev. Johanna Newberry Green, a native Washingtonian, has over 35 active years in ministry. She has been a Sunday School teacher and the vice president and director of promotion & education for the Sarah Allen Missionary Society here at Metropolitan. Rev. Green is well known for her service with the YPD. She was the YPD Director here at Metropolitan, then YPD Director for the conference, and later on the Episcopal and Connectional levels of the AME church. Additionally, Rev. Green served 15 years on the Board of Trustees for Metropolitan.

Rev. Green retired from the Federal Government where she held progressively responsible senior level management positions in personnel, status of women’s affairs & EEO. Upon retiring, she decided to continue her education by obtaining a BA in sociology and an MA in religious studies from Howard University. She started Green Pastures Ministry, concentrating on spiritual retreats. Rev. Green worked for 6 years as the Protestant Chaplain at Georgetown University in Washington DC and received numerous awards and certificates for her ministerial work, including a certificate from Shalem Institute in Bethesda, MD.

God has blessed Rev. Green with 59 years of marriage to David Green. They have two daughters, Francine & Jackie; 6 grandchildren; and 2 great grandchildren. Rev. Green’s greatest joy is the time that she spends with her loving family. One of the family traditions is enjoying the delicious birthday cakes that Rev. Green bakes for each individual birthday celebration.

We are grateful that GOD has blessed Metropolitan with Rev. Johanna Newberry Green.

Beginning Wednesday February 2, 2011, the exhibit America I Am, the African American Imprint will begin its showing at the National Geographic Museum during Black History Month and continue until May 1, 2011. This exhibit celebrates 500 years of African American contributions to the United States. Tickets are on sale at www.ngmuseum.org or (202) 857-7700.

Take a journey through trials and triumphs while exploring nearly 500 years of African American contributions to the economic, political, cultural, and spiritual development of the United States. Bear witness to more than 200 poignant artifacts from the dungeon doors of the Cape Coast Castle in Ghana to Prince’s guitar.

Created in collaboration with leading scholars such as Henry Louis Gates Jr. and Cornel West, the exhibition is presented by Tavis Smiley, and organized by Cincinnati Museum Center and Arts and Exhibitions International.
